University Considers New Solar Panel Plan for Renewability

The University of St Andrews is considering a new plan to install solar panels atop 65 university buildings to further its goal of net zero emissions by 2035.

Though the weather in St Andrews may seem dreary and unappealing, it is actually the sunniest spot in Scotland. Receiving 1540 hours of sunlight each year (with Dundee in second at 1458 hours), St Andrews has relatively good conditions compared to the rest of Scotland.

Now, university officials are considering capitalising on this natural resource through an ambitious plan to adorn university buildings with solar panels.

Experts on renewability at Vital Energi are assisting the university with establishing this system which would save 200 tonnes of carbon each year, pushing St Andrews closer to its promise of net zero emissions. The new energy source would also future-proof the university’s energy security and provide a level of reliability that brings long-term benefits.

With renewable efforts at the Eden Campus already aiding in limiting St Andrews carbon footprint, the addition of solar panels across the university is another logical step in taking action against the climate crisis.

Despite being Scotland’s oldest university, St Andrews seeks to embrace modernity and help future generations by creating a sustainable infrastructure. With the aid of individual student action in limiting food and energy waste, the University of St Andrews has become a leader in turning words into actions in combating the present climate emergency.
