Chilly Days, Stylish Ways — Students Talk Autumn Accessories

As we move into the autumnal months, St Andrews students are gradually switching out their stylish, summer wardrobes for warmer accessories. Whilst for most people, the end of summer also means the end of their most fashionable season, if you get your hands on the right accessories, you can find a way to express yourself even in the coldest weather.

For this article, I took to the street The Central pub on Market Street, to be exact to ask students what autumnal accessories they will be wearing to stay fashionable this autumn.

Winter Hat Makar

After a quick but informative interview with fellow St Andrews student, Makar, I discovered his go-to place for Autumn accessories is the small but trendy Pluto of St Andrews. The store opened on South Street in 2023. Its clothing stands out from the rest of the stores in our town because it’s a concept store offering vintage designer clothing, golf equipment and skateboards. In addition, it also offers collections of some student brands like Beware of Dog.

Makar described his personal style as a ‘diverse mix of eccentric colours and unique pieces like patterned trousers or bright coloured sweaters.’That’s why, like many others, he finds it difficult to express his personal style as the season gets colder because he just wants to wear a big jacket that covers all his other clothes but keeps him warm. For students facing similar problems, Pluto of St Andrews is a must-visit because it sells unique accessories that can allow your style to shine through even when covering your outfit with a big jacket.

Leather Jackets Alex and Lucy

Lucy tells me that her autumn staple is her black leather jacket from Buffalo Exchange, a thrift shop in her hometown of New Orleans. While in St Andrews, she regularly looks for autumn accessories at Salvation Army. This charity shop is located on Church Street and offers a much more affordable alternative for students hoping to complete their autumnal wardrobe as most items are priced under £20.

Moreover, charity shops also carry a wider range of accessories with more unique styles. If your looking for any specific accessory, from a unique statement necklace to winter boots - you will be sure to find it either at Salvation Army or at the other charity shops lining Bell Street and South Street.

Last but not least, I spoke to Alex who informed me that her accessory of the season was her Maroon faux-leather trench coat from Stradivarius. She describes her style as ‘chic and sophisticated;’ mainly combining leather, staple turtlenecks and dark and neutral tones.

She sometimes finds it difficult to find stores in St Andrews that align with her personal style so she leans towards online shopping for her wardrobe. For students with a similar style, stores such as ASOS, Urban Outfitters and Bershka offer really warm and cosy accessories for students and often have student discount codes (varying from 10 - 30%) which make them much more affordable.
