This past Wednesday, the University of St. Andrews Men's 4s football team hosted the Dundee 2s, aiming to capture their first win of the season. Despite the rain and the looming “Storm Amy”, the 4s team was ready to kick off a long-awaited home opener.
The opening minutes marked a slow start for the Saints, falling 0-2 to the 2s at the end of the first.
Refusing to back down, Teddy Fritzinger brought momentum to the second half with the Saints' first goal of the game, making the score 1-2. However, Dundee refused to take their foot off the gas, quickly scoring twice more. With 30 minutes to play, the score sat at 1-4.
From there, Fritzinger turned up yet again and scored a hat trick with two back-to-back goals to make the score 4-3. Unfortunately, even with a comeback
offensive effort and defensive presence, the team couldn’t find an equalizer and ended the match in defeat.
An impressive opener against a challenging team, the lads know that this is just the beginning.
First-year Oliver Leonard shared his experience with the team thus far, noting his excitement for the rest of the season. He emphasized the positive environment and camaraderie the 4s team has fostered in just the first couple of weeks: “Great group of people and a great coach,” Leonard said. “I’m proud of the team’s resilience despite the result. We’re looking forward to our next match.”
The 4s play again in three weeks and hope to see more familiar faces at their next match.
