An interview with Netball Club president Amy Gordon
AB: For our international peers, what is netball?
AG: It’s a team and ball sport that’s a bit like basketball except you can’t move with the ball (and unlike basketball you don’t have the be at least 6’5”). Each team has max 7 players on court at any one time. Each player has a specific position, and they work together to pass the ball down the court to score goals through a hoop. After 60-minutes is up, the team with the most goals wins.
AB: What would you say was the club's biggest achievement last year?
AG: Last year was fantastic: at Sports Awards Netball won Charitable Club of the Year and saw loads of individuals picking up silverware. The 2nd 4th and 5th teams all got promoted up a league and the outreach programs with Madras College, Volunteer Zambia and Junior Saints saw significant growth.
AB: Aims for the 2024/5 season?
AG: Win Club of the Year at Sports Awards, continue to grow the outreach programs, keep all teams in their current leagues following last years’ promotions and keep up the club’s growth and development.
AB: And your biggest rivals?
AG: Strathclyde Uni, Edinburgh Uni, and twisted ankles.
AB: Best social?
AG: Christmas dinner and end-of-season meal are always very wholesome. Adam Sandler night is always a good laugh.
AB: How can people get involved?
AG: Recreational sessions are Wednesdays 6-8pm, all abilities welcome (plus the recreational squad also has its own socials). Throughout the year there are mixed league tournaments to raise money for charity that anyone can join – they will be advertised on social media pages.
