A clash as timeless as the beautiful game itself took place on the 4th of September at 16:30, in which Fried John United (The Spaniards) overcame Latinos FC (LFC) to achieve a much-needed statement win. The game ended 7-1, but that scoreline doesn't truly reflect the clash between the rivals. Star debuts, patient and composed defending, as well as never-ending throw-ins made this Hispanic derby an excellent match.

Sunday League is made up of multiple divisions; the league that Fried John and Latinos FC play in consists of 6 Teams, has 5 game weeks, and it is one of the lower leagues. Neither team had achieved a victory and hoped to grasp their first win this match. Additionally, many players had friends on both teams, which definitely made the game feel more personal.

Coming off a 5-7 loss, Fried John United was looking for the win with some passionate technical play. They did just that. The first half started off with an early goal from Pepe of FJU.

LFC kept their resolve and weren't going to let their guard down. A stalemate ensued where there were many back passes and players shouting “CALMA!!” as both sides looked to hold onto possession.

It became clear to LFC that their best chance at a goal was to test the keeper as much as possible because any build-up play was squandered by strong tackles from the opposition. This strategy paid off as a shot pushed away by the goalie ended up at the feet of Juan Atuesta from LFC, who quickly crossed it into their striker Vicente Sanchez, who assertively headed the ball into the back of the net. At 1-1, it was clear LFC were not just going to give up.

Unfortunately for LFC, Fried John United’s strategy seemed to be working just as well. With major quality in the midfield, they were able to progress the ball up the field with vision and passes cutting through the Latinos' defense.

After two more goals for FJU in the first half, it was clear that they were the stronger team that day. The weakness of LFC became increasingly apparent through the second half; they had no players on the bench, and so could not make any substitutions.

FJU, on the other hand, had 10 players on the bench and were able to consistently rotate players and keep the team fresh and full of stamina. This led to many second half chances for FJU, and the LFC strategy began to be less feasible. FJU went on to score 4 more goals in the second half.

I asked right back Diren Chugani, a defender for Fried John United, for his thoughts after the game. He was very happy that they could finally get their first win as a team and hopefully start a run of good performances. When asked what they could have done better, he said, “Happy that we got the win, but at some point, all of us were trying to score.”  Chugani’s man of the match was newcomer and “great super-sub” Armangue, who played the final 2 minutes of the game and was able to score a penalty.

It was truly a game to remember for FJU and probably a match LFC soon hopes to forget. The game was played with passion and respect, as people have come to expect from El Clásico of St Andrews Sunday league.
