Not far outside St Andrews' town centre lies The Social, one of the newest additions to SPACE St Andrews. This restaurant is open to the public, and offers something for everyone, whether town or gown.

The Social has recently launched their new and improved menu and expanded the kitchen’s opening hours. Earlier in the day, the toasties and baguette sandwiches are popular, and once the kitchen opens, Katsu curry and burgers are proving to be fast favourites, according to head chef Thomas McLean. Additionally, the fall drink menu is perfect to romanticise the ever-shorter Scottish days. The restaurant's walls of windows with a scenic view of town make it an ideal spot to escape the cold and get some studying done while sipping a pumpkin spice, gingerbread, or maple spice latte.

Hannah and Sophie, who can often be found seated at a booth with coconut cappuccinos, are among The Social’s most beloved regulars. When I spoke to them about why they prefer The Social over other restaurants and cafes in St Andrews, they emphasised not only the convenience of the location, as they are SPACE residents, but also the welcoming environment and friendly staff, whom they have grown to know personally. Hannah also appreciates the gluten free food options, while Sophie finds the restaurant's bustle and soft music conducive to studying.

A few too many nights out at the pub can be hard on student budgets, but the discounted student drinks menu make The Social a smart option for students looking to save money. Additionally, the free pool table, dart boards, and bookable pods equipped with karaoke machines help set the scene for a fun night out with friends.

The Social regularly hosts events, including a pub quiz hosted by Thirsty Works every Monday from 7-9 pm. With free entry and a £50 bar tab reward, there’s no excuse not to grab your friends and book a table or gamble on a walk-in. Also, CombiniCo, one of St Andrews students’ favourite food spots, offering great sushi and hot food, is holding a pop-up event at The Social this Thursday, November 12th. Live entertainment will accompany the one-day only menu complete with tailored drink options prepared by Combini chefs in the Social’s kitchen.

For all the Americans missing Thanksgiving, on Thursday, November 26th, The Social will be offering one and two course traditional Thanksgiving meals. This slice of America could cure your homesickness. The Social is also bringing back puppy yoga. Hosted in the SPACE auditorium, this event is always sure to sell out and offers a calming workout as well as a chance to play with some furry friends.

In addition to their already-existing resident discount, residents of SPACE Accommodation now have a £2 coffee deal on weekdays before noon- the same prices as the Black Sheep and Starbucks UNiDAYS discounts, but throughout the week. Members of the neighbouring SALT gym also receive a discount on all purchases at The Social, making it an ideal option for a post-gym session cheat day sweet treat, or to refuel with a protein shake.

The shop located alongside The Social is a lifesaver for SPACE residents, students, and locals who live in the area. Whether for a late-night snack, forgotten ingredient, or proper grocery run, its convenience makes it the perfect solution to its distance from other grocery stores. As with other aspects of life at SPACE, the shop is very customer-oriented, so has a request sheet to ensure it meets customers’ needs.
