On Saturday, the St. Andrews Saints varsity rugby team traveled south to Hive Stadium to face their longtime rivals, the University of Edinburgh.

The match, known as the Scottish Varsity Match, drew students from both universities, filling the stands well before kickoff. The annual fixture dates back more than 160 years, as both rugby clubs are among the oldest in the world (founded in 1857 and 1858). In the first half, Edinburgh got off to a strong start, leading 11-6 at halftime. Fueled by cheers from the Saints supporters, St. Andrews rallied to tie the score at 11-11.

Though wind and rain picked up after the break, students and fans stayed on, eager to see if the Saints could complete the comeback. St. Andrews pulled ahead in the second half, setting up a dramatic finish. But in the final seconds, Edinburgh surged forward once more, breaking through and sealing a 26-23 victory.
