Down to Funk: Groovesvilla

Down to funk describe themselves as a “west London based party service bringing the finest audio-visual experiences to venues near you”. Thus far, they have put on two events, the first being Beauty in the Beat. Groovesvilla took place in the Vic and was an all-around enjoyable evening. My friends and I had gone in celebration of one of our friends turning twenty, and when we arrived around eleven (the event opens at ten), we didn’t have to wait long outside and got branded with a Vic sticker upon arrival.

We headed straight up to the main bar where it was already fairly busy, with great music in flow. I definitely liked the layout of the Vic as a venue, as the bar in the main room was on one side of the room with the DJ set up on the opposite side, something which when the two are right next to each other can be too chaotic.

Right off the bat, my friend Lucy firmly said that the “music here is top tier” and whilst down to funk events will cost you at least twice the amount for a ticket if not more than the union, it was definitely an enjoyable evening. Even then the tickets are still reasonably priced, with the most you’d be paying is around eight pounds. The capacity of people did however seem much smaller. The Vic has two rooms, the second is a room more suitable for dancing with a bit of space and more of the classic tunes, and the main room being a bit more funk. Then they connect inside and outside, going around in some loop which made the whole event flow very nicely.

The line-up is listed as follows: With BARTY, Jack the Rippa, BURRA (B Diddy), DILLION S in the main room all doing an hour set each and then in the side from half ten till one was  Albion (Szentek), with B Diddy then playing for the last hour. I can definitely say that the event lived up to its name of groovesvilla. In addition to this, both rooms played a bit of ABBA, which is never negative, and the songs were worked in perfectly to match the sets. Whilst the side room was less busy, they had some proper jams going on such as Sweet Dreams, Pompeii, and Like The Way You Work It.

All in all, it was an excellent night, and an event I would readily go to again!
