Strength in Numbers — Success for Saints Tennis Club

The University of St Andrews Tennis Club has had a standout year so far. As the semester draws to a close, Club President Timothy Moore answers some questions about how the season has been going, what they are looking forward to, and things to get excited for.

What was the highlight of the semester for the tennis club?

Although picking one highlight from the semester is a difficult task, I would have to go with our annual Halloween Mini-Red Tournament.

This year, we ran the event in partnership with our chosen charity, Papyrus UK! We had over 80 people of all tennis abilities come down in fancy dress to battle it out for victory. We used mini-red courts which are basically scaled down tennis courts with a larger and softer ball. This helps to level the playing field and adds a cool twist to the game.

Alongside this, we ran some fun games like 'Pin the hair on Euan' (our coach), a raffle, and a best costume competition. Overall, the event raised more than £600 for a great cause and saw members from all areas of our club (from social members to our top performance players) participate, socialize, and have some fun on court!

Which team has been standing out recently?

The Men's 3s have been standing out recently in BUCS. Currently undefeated in Men's Scottish Tier 3, they are well poised to (hopefully) gain promotion this year and have shown outstanding commitment in recent weeks. Allez!

What are your goals for the club or specific teams, going into second semester?

Going into the second semester, Saints Tennis is aiming to capitalize on the success we've had over the last few months. Above all else, our primary goal is to continue to foster a positive environment for our 500 members.

While player development, coaching, and competing is of course a large focus of the club, we also want our members to use the sport of tennis to make meaningful connections and have fun. The social scene has been fantastic this year, and we encourage anyone interested to come check our Wednesday socials out.

In the second semester, we are aspiring to continue to grow our recreational player base and allow for more integration between our social and competitive members. If we could achieve that, it would be mission success.

What is the biggest rivalry game that people should watch out for to attend?

Any match versus Stirling University. They're always our trickiest fixture, and we promise that if you come down to watch, you're in for a blockbuster. All match fixtures are also broadcast on our Instagram (@ustatennisclub). Remember to bring your popcorn.

Where should those interested in joining the club direct their queries?

If you're interested in picking up tennis or getting involved with the tennis club, you can reach out to us on Instagram (@ustatennisclub) or email us (tennis@st-andrews.ac.uk). Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions! We are always looking for more people to get involved in our sport.

Good luck to Timothy and Saints Tennis on the rest of the season! Go Saints!
