The Whisky Room of St Andrews Brewing Company is sought-after among students as an unconventional study space, for meetings or society events. The Stand itself added to the stampede of people that pound up the wooden stairs armed with pints of locally brewed ale on Monday 23rd September, for their first social of the year.
This, of course, was the perfect opportunity for me to introduce Vic Does Chips to my colleagues. By 18:30, my order had been placed for one portion of skin-on fries. It felt like a lot of work on my end, getting what I wanted. I was not asked for my table number, nor was I offered condiments when the chips did eventually find us. I extend my thanks to Eve Parsons, Editor-in-Chief of The Stand, whose internal sauce radar swiftly located Heinz ketchup, Heinz mayo, French’s mustard and a paper sachet each of salt and pepper.
The stand-off between fries and chunky chips is one that will never be resolved, but it is clear which side BrewCo favours. Their fries were deliciously crispy on the outside and had enough variety of length to keep the group entertained, guessing which were to be pulled out short or long. I was, however, disappointed that the crispiness took away any inside softness. It is up to you whether that is a worthy compromise.
