The regular pub-goer needs no further encouragement than the hot early-afternoon sun before finding themselves in the most conveniently facing garden for sunshine and, albeit often unintentionally, chips. The Jigger Inn offers an element of fine dining to these rounds about town.
To set the scene and to start the ‘Vic Does Chips’ series with the utmost enthusiasm, I invited Editor-in-Chief of The Stand, Eve Parsons, to join me outside on Table 35. We were aware of the tee shots from the 17th tee of the Old Course and the threat of beady-eyed seagulls but, after one pint of Jigger Ale (unreasonably priced at £7.20) had disappeared down the hatches, we were more than curious to conduct a chip review.
One portion of Koffman’s Chunky Chips at The Jigger Inn sets back your bank account by £5.00. This is only slightly higher than the St Andrews market average, which I aim to calculate as this series progresses. It is to be noted that Koffman’s chips are frozen and bought in. Upon further research, however, it was revealed to me that this can be both a benefit for the kitchen and the consumer.
Chef Josh of Lupo’s Italiano emphasised the convenience of buying a £50 box of frozen chips over a £20 box of King Edwards – preparing the raw potatoes would add two more hours onto what is already a long working day. Once the hourly wage is considered, frozen chips become more attractive for being quick, efficient and cost effective.
The texture of Koffman’s Chunky Chips offered crunch and fluffiness, though the contrast between the two was not as high as expected or desired. Served hot, they did stay warm for over half an hour.
I must conclude with a round of applause for the service. Seconds after ordering (table service only), a full array of condiments appeared in a wooden holder: salt and pepper, Sarson’s vinegar, French’s mustard, Hellman’s mayo and Heinz ketchup. We were each given a personal dip palette (a side plate) and napkins (do we look like messy eaters?). Nothing was left untouched.
With this, I shall leave on my last note to get down and get Jiggy.
