Down to Funk: Beauty & The Beat

With the first week of classes in full swing, students eagerly flooded St. Andrews, celebrating their official return to the town. This past Thursday, Down to Funk offered St. Andrews an energized event to push students through the final stretch of the first week of classes. Beauty & The Beat delivered just what it promised: an electrifying lineup of six local acts boasting music from many different eras to keep the energy in The Vic fresh.

Upon arriving at The Vic on Market Street on Thursday, I was immediately met with a queue of people, signalling just how sought after Beauty & The Beat was; after all, the event was sold out (and people were still queued to get in after the event had concluded later)! All prospective attendees were buzzing with anticipation, some even dancing to the music that was already floating down The Vic’s staircase. The Vic is divided into two event spaces, the main room and the social club, each with their own bars and dance floors with an outdoor patio in the back and a staircase landing connecting the two in the front.

Although each space boasted different dance floors and music, the invigorating atmosphere was ever present throughout, making it easy to bounce between the areas to enjoy the dual experience The Vic offers. In the main room, the bar and the dance floor are one and the same, so waiting for drinks was hardly a task as everyone continued dancing and chatting.

With a jam-packed lineup of DJ’s, The Vic never seemed to have a dull moment. Playing music spanning decades with hits like “I’m Coming Out” by Diana Ross as well as newer House music beats, the DJs all offered eclectic choices to appeal to everyone at some point in the night. As the time drew closer to midnight, the venue was bursting at the seams with people; I, along with the rest of the crowd, lost myself in the dynamic music as the event amped up.

The social club was no different from the main room in terms of energy. While the social club’s bar and dance floor are divided and smaller than that of the main room, the lively tone of the event flowed throughout. The more intimate dance floor of the social club allowed more direct interaction with the DJ as some guests even turned tables with them towards the conclusion of the night!

Beauty & The Beat continued hours past midnight, the loom of Friday’s classes the last thing on any event-goer’s mind, myself included. The disco vibe of the night allowed everyone to be present in the moment, focusing only on the music, the drinks, and the people in front of them. In fact, I felt the night to be celebratory as attendees were celebrating not only the soon to be completed first week of classes but also simply being in person together once again, dancing and laughing with friends and strangers alike, all united by a simple event at The Vic. For such a simple event consisting of music and booze, what made it memorable was the atmosphere of excitement, anticipation, and celebration. Surely such a successful Beauty & the Beat indicates more outstanding events at The Vic to come!
